Time to buy tomato seeds

So I've got a greenhouse ordered and intend on growing a world supply of tomatoes 🤣🤣 after this year's shortages I was wondering when to buy seeds. If I get them now will they still be ok for spring ?

I get them now or in early spring, depending on which ones I want and who has them  :)

Tomato seeds last a really long time so yes they will be fine so long as you don't store them in the oven or something silly.
I expect people will be buying more seeds this/next year and earlier to avoid the delays some people experienced last year. I'm waiting until around october to buy mine as that's around the time the new season's seeds go on sale. though the black friday deals later on can be excellent.

I was still using a packet of Roma seeds that my dad opened in 95,  taking just 2 or 3 out each year.   All germinated right to the end which was 2014.

  • Thanks all I do think that they maybe in short supply if sales match the spring flower seed sales and the massive greenhouse sales. I have ordered seeds, gardener's delighted, sungold and marmande along with basil and marigold seeds. Clearly a unimaginative collection but hopefully a good choice for beginners. Thanks @Fairygirl @Skandi @Lyn and @pansyface

@Wilderbeast - remember we have a seed swap thread here too, so you can always ask for a few seeds from other members if you want to experiment with some other varieties  :)

@Wilderbeast   Good choice of seeds.  I plant marigolds and basil with in my tomato rows to keep the wee beasties away!.  I love the smell of tomato leaves and basil leaves.  Summer!
A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

  • Do you want a cooking tomato @Wilderbeast Roma are good.
  • @purplerallim I'm going to start with these 3 this year and spread my wings after, well if I have any success. @tuikowhai34 The smell of tomatoes takes me back to my Grandads greenhouse, I used to change the soil for him every year digging it out and replacing with soil and sheep manure.Started doing it when I was 9 and carried on for years.

I agree about the Roma, no messing about picking of side shoots, just plant and leave to grow.

  • Just make sure to give it plenty of room, it has thick stems and is bushy, isn't it  @Lyn 😁
