Animal poo

Morning all, found this animal poo this morning on my raised veg sleeper beds. Just wondered if anyone had any clues as to what animal this could come from? Thanks for your help!

  • Hi Rosie,

Looks very hedgehog like to me - cigar/sausage shaped and black. Probably been feasting on slugs in the beds. This year we've found lots of it in our garden and seen lots of hogs on the camera traps. You'd be surprised how well they can climb steps too!

If you really wanted to (and I have done it), you can leave some droppings to dry and then break them up. If it's hedgehog you'd probably find bits of beetle shell and seeds. Just me? OK!

Looks like hedgehog to me too .... possibly an adult and a smaller one?

  • The beds are quite high, probably about 2.5 feet high!

Unless the hedgehogs in the area are extremely athletic, I suspect rat droppings.  They look pretty small.
  • There could be some of each ... but ‘our’ hedgehogs navigate their way up onto the Shady Bank which is edged by two sleepers on edge on top of each other.

I was worried someone would say it looked like rat poo. I hate rats! But then again, I guess most people do!
  • They don't really look like rat poo to me ... their droppings are far more regular, pellet-like and usually several in a group.
