    That should be fine, but it's important not to keep adding soil/mulch higher round the trunk. If in doubt, lay mulch on the surrounding soil, but leave a gap round the trunk.
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

  • Ok a mulch might be better, when is it best to mulch an Apple tree? Spring? I wanted to add more soil as I can see a thick root close to the ground? Also it looks as if there’s a slight split in the back where it meets the ground.

    You can mulch any time. Do it when ground is moist though, especially if you're in a very dry area. Roots shouldn't be exposed.
    If there's a split in the trunk, that could be a problem later on if it's deep enough to allow diseases in. Not my area of expertise though.
