Steep (long) grassy slope into wildflower meadow?

Hi all,
I’d really appreciate some advice.. we have a Long steep grassy slope at the end of our garden, which gets the afternoon sun. Originally we thought that planting grass to grow long would be great for wildlife and be low maintenance, but as it turns out, it’s pretty barren, and the long grass has been trampled down by our dog and just looks a mess!!
I’d like to grow wildflowers from Seed and then plug them in gradually, but I don’t know what to do with the existing grass? Do I try to strim it? The ground underneath is v bumpy so it will be patchy if I do. Do I just Dig up and turn all Of the grass and start again? I don’t want the long grass to smother the wildflowers..
Any advice V appreciated!
