  • There are pigeons everywhere... Might be that? I was expecting a different bite from pigeons.

how can I protect it from them?

We’ve built a frame with wood and mesh to protect ours from pigeons and Cabbage Whites.
You may not have the space for that, but some sort of frame with mesh or netting will do the job against pigeons. Mesh works for the butterflies earlier in the year too, but hopefully not so important now.

Or you can make little wire cages like the ones you can see over our radicchio ... but they won't be big enough for the winter when they've grown three feet tall.

Before you protect them they need splitting up and planting out further apart and probably in fresh compost too.  They need to be a couple of feet apart ... they grow into large plants.

  • Ok will do that. Considering it will be in a pot or in a cardboard box... how should I attach the net? It will blow away when windy i guess
  • You'll have to be inventive  ;)

  • I had a similar problem with an invisible something stripping my brassicas. I have them planted in a fruit cage to deter the dreaded Cabbage White. I could see no poo etc to
identify the  culprit so put slug pellets down which dealt with a few slugs but the munching continued so I heavily drenched each plant with washing up liquid diluted in water. That has done the trick.
Have just treated one variety of my dahlias. The buds were being munched when half open, I checked for earwigs etc. but couldn't see anything. Am going to check today to see if my plan of action has helped. The odd thing is only one variety was being attacked, all of the the others are flowering normally.
