Echinacea with petals growing from head

I have attached a photo showing one of the flower heads of my echinacea purpurea which has some petals growing from it. These appear to be growing from the top of the flower head

and cannot be pulled out without breaking them. Is this unusual?

It is an example of fasciation, which is not uncommon.

Thank you for your speedy response. Googled fascination after your reply and sure enough, some amazing images. Many of which appear also to be on flowers in the daisy/coneflower range.
