Alternatives to Leylandii

Hi all,

I am looking for some advice on hedge plants, Conifers in particular. We have a Conifer hedge and would like to extend it. It has been identified by the local garden centre as a 'Lawsons Cypress', or Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Green pillar'. It is dark green and 10 feet high.

They have told me that this type of Conifer is rarely grown or used these days and so using Leyland Cypress would be a good alternative and match, however I am aware that this is very high maintenance hedge plant.

Does anyone know if there are any other slightly easier care alternatives that would match in well to the existing hedge?

Many thanks
Mtp

Thank you both for your replies.

I have also seen some small Cham. ‘Green pillar’ available but not at the larger size I will need. The existing hedge is 9ft high so I want to start with plants around 5ft if I can.

Do you think Thuja plicata would look ok joining into the Lawsons Cypress hedge?

It looks pretty similar in pictures, maybe a bit lighter green in colour as the Lawsons is quite a dark green.

    Thank you for your help.

I think your best bet may be to take a piece of the cham. to a thuja supplier and compare them.

Just bear in mind that starting with mature plants isn't easy  :)
I should have also said that McLarens supply lots of outlets all over the country, as well as selling directly. They do mail order I think [I haven't checked]  but would possibly be able to help anyway if you couldn't locate the plants nearer to you.

Thuja is a good alternative  :)
