Dahlia leaves being eaten

My dahlia leaves are being decimated! No slug slime, no evidence of any pest. Any ideas?

Looks like slug/snail damage to me
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Earwigs and caterpillars can also cause a lot of damage, but I doubt it's caterpillars, and earwigs mainly go for the flowers.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Its slugs, they have got to mine too, and somehow manage not to leave slime

. Cant find any slugs though,Thinking I might not bother with Dahlias next year.
