Garden smell

  • It’s the only thing I’ll use Jeyes Fluid for @Lyn ... a couple of times a year usually sorts it ... but we’re not on a septic tank.

@Lyn . As Dove says  re washing machines mine smelt horrible every time I used it but adjusting the drainage pipe stopped it completely. It had a bit of a loop which left water laying in the pipe

To clarify ... it’s not my washing machine that smells ... the smell comes from the drain when water starts to run through and the ‘gas’ is displaced  ... I  also get a whiff if I’m in the garden when OH is washing up or taking a shower.

I've got lots of agapanthus on my terrace and I noticed a whiff the other day when I was out there. I thought it was hedgehog poo, lol

Could it be the smell of general detritus drying out within/underneath the artificial grass?  If drainage isn't addresses properly before laying, it can become rather whiffy.

I was thinking just the same Bob.
When we were restoring headstones the dead plant life and slugs in the plant pots was disgusting to a point of me retching.  School dinner greens springs to mind.

@K67. I’ll have a look at the pipe, it’s only the first flush of water pumping from the washing machine that smells.

@Dovefromabove. We do have a septic tank so no bleach or Jeyes allowed. But it’s not from the drain, definitely from the machine.

@Lyn exactly what ours was doing. Ours was fitted by a retired plumber.. my husband and according to the many letters we had when he retired  a good one too 😁 but me and Google found the cause 👍or is that Google and I?

  • Thanks everyone. Drains are at the front of the house and not had problems in that respect. I wonder if it is, in fact, something to do with the artificial grass. It was laid when the previous people owned the house - probably by the developers (houses are 6 years old.) I’ve been considering doing away with it. It’s not creature-friendly (even gravel gets spiders 🕷 etc.) I’ve no idea how it drains after rain.
Love the comment re neighbour smell! (not the friendliest of individuals!) ☹️

Perhaps it's the neighbour and his drains @Lyn Plant-Wells  :D

The grass does sound like a possibility. I haven't heard of anyone mentioning it before, but perhaps the methods used for the prep, and the ground conditions,  haven't been the best either.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Elderly (dour) woman next door is very fussy re cleaning and drains are at the front of the houses.😂 My instinct is that it’s the artificial grass. I will ask the opinion of the garden maintenance company when they quote for fencing and alterations. 🤔
