Planting Allium Purple Sensation

harmonyharmony Posts: 403
I've bought some Allium Purple Sensation bulbs (45 in total). I've never grown them before so I would appreciate advice on how many to group together
so they look their best. I am hoping to have at least 3 separate groups but will take any advice. Also how close should I plant the bulbs that are together in each group. Thankyou

I am planting them among hardy geraniums (Rozanne and a similar pink one can't remember it's name)..

They look good weaving through a border, it helps hide the leaves that tend to die off before the flowers have finished.
The planting guide you shoukd have 'received will give planting depths and distance between bulbs

I grew them last year and the advice if I can recall was to provide some decent drainage if your soil isn't. Also planting them a bit deeper is better than too shallow, this helps them anchor and gives them a better chance of returning.

As for arranging them it would be dependent on the style you were going for. You could have 3 groupings of say 9 and the remaining 18 bulbs weaving between. For a more natural look irregular spacing and no noticeable patterns works best, for formal the it's the opposite.

I wouldn't plant them closer than a foot apart. I plant them in loose and irregular 3s 5s and 7s with 1-3ft between them. And the occasional singleton as an outlier.

Plant six inches deep. If they are shallow they tend to split into lots of small unflowering bulbs after the first year. Planted deep they come back year after year.

Thank you for that info I think I've made that mistake in the past with planting bulbs too shallow and they've come up blind but didn't realise that was the reason...

Thanks to everyone for the info, very helpful as always..
