I'd be very wary of putting a bin on top of that site. You'll have to wait ages to ensure there's no bamboo still there.  :/
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I think the bamboo is in a container under the soil, so I should be OK.

    We shall see :-).

Whatever you do, make sure you can easily get in with a garden fork to be able to turn it once a week or so,  that’s what ensures a quick turnover of compost.

  • I am listening and I think I will change my strategy, and put the *first* compost bin in the next raised bed whilst dealing with that bamboo a little more slowly.

The other bed has strawberries in it at present, which will have to be lifted for propagation earlier than planned - maybe.

    The project proceeds.

Smaller compost bin laid out, nearly airproof liner and a bit of insulation in place. not quite the ideal shape but there is a nice gooseberry just behind it which gets a chance next year.

Time for climber trimmings and some brown stuff, and to uncover the content of the dales .. top half into this at the bottom for a strong strat with part rotted compost, and the rest of the dalek into ready to use compost.

Then to find a pallet for the front and a lid.

  • Wow, you have made really good progress! Looks really good 😊

Thanks for the compliment, but I do rather think that anyone else would have done it in 2 hours rather than 3 weeks.

What is the weed suppressant fabric for?

Create a sleeve for and protect the 50mm polystyrene insulation and keep airflow down a little more especially a5 the corners. It is just staple gunned to the posts. That's less than 50p worth.

Really just experimenting. It is the Wickes heavy duty stuff that I always have around, since I buy on a 3 for 2 plus discount (*) every few years and use whenever I do gravel, raised bed etc.

    * Wickes are promiscuous with their trade accounts 10% off, plus they have a good further 10% off on certain reloadable cash card programmes, which brings it way down.

It will be really interesting to see what temps you get with polystyrene insulation. That is part of how Hotbin works - with poly insulation all around and above. Do make sure your bin is not too high to be able to turn easily.
