Kew Herbarium catalogue

I hadn't realised that Kew had digitised a large part of their preserved plant specimen collection. The website is not exactly sophisticated but how fascinating to looking at plants that were collected over a century ago without taking one's bum off the chair.

Have a go: http://apps.kew.org/herbcat/gotoHerbariumGrowthPage.do

Fun browsing though random records like this fern collected in 1853 http://apps.kew.org/herbcat/getImage.do?imageBarcode=K000435396

or a 1960s Kniphofia http://apps.kew.org/herbcat/getImage.do?imageBarcode=K000256220

or this 1967 Salvia http://apps.kew.org/herbcat/getImage.do?imageBarcode=K000486637

  • Just makes you wonder if anyone could use all that work done to digitise the collection and to utilise the assets for learning purposes online. Currently it's just a digital filing system.
