Hesperantha Varieties

edhelkaedhelka Posts: 2,351
I have a love-hate relationship with hesperantha. For 9 months they are an invasive weed and for 2-3 months they are the star of the garden. I have a red version (many clumps) and a pink one (one clump).
The red ones are taller and more invasive. It thrives in all parts of my garden - moist or dry, sun or shade, no watering, no feeding. Take a clump, leave it with exposed roots next to a shed for months, it still survives and flowers. Give it a tiny bit better conditions and it spreads. Similarly spreading as crocosmia. And as a bonus, it self-seeds everywhere.
The pink ones are much better behaved but also shorter, they start to flower later and they are less showy (but also less floppy).
I am thinking about getting the white ones. Maybe replacing one of the red clumps.
Do you have any experience with the white form and how does it compare to the red and pink?

  • We found that most of the hybrids we had died out, or were certainly out-competed by the species red variety.  We also had a love-hate relationship with them, and eventually saw them as too invasive, so we got rid of them.

We had a lovely pink one, called Fenland Daybreak, but in the end it just disappeared.  We had the white one, Duke of Alba, but that also didn't do as well as the red.  If we were to grow them again, we would avoid the red ones, and just grow the pink or white varieties, for the reasons you say.
  • I agree, Fenland Daybreak with its subtle soft pink is gorgeous, and well-behaved. Mine flowered for the best part of six months. Hesperantha associate well with grasses which I like. No experience of the white cultivars I’m afraid.
