My eating apples have been like that. They're a soft variety and the storms have left every one of them battered and bruised. They dry well though so they won't get wasted.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
Does anybody know when James Grieve apples are ready to pick please? Most of ours left on the tree are now turning red and are fairly large. The ones we picked/fell a couple of weeks ago were not nice to eat though, OH says not very juicy and a bit sharp.
Sorry Neil, just realized I'm hijacking your thread!
Hi all, Many thanks for your replies! It's consoling to know I'm not alone in my problems.
In addition to them refusing to come away cleanly, I'm now noticing brown bruising like patches, around 10mm or so across on them. It's not bitter pip, as there is no depression, and it certainly isn't scab. Sounds like a similar problem to yours Skandi, so I guess I need to harvest them before they start going off. I avoided the birds pecking, however, by netting my trees, as I'd hear blackbirds were a problem on apple trees this year. I am starting to suspect half the appreciation from eating bramley apples comes from the wonder of successfully managing to grow them :-)
Kind regards.
Ps. No problem Lizzie. I just opened the door to a conversation. It's not mine :-)
