Sorbus aria 'Lutescens' Tree - help with health

Hi,

Purchased a Sorbus tree 4 months ago and its been going pair shaped ! Wondering if anyone is able to provide advice to recover the health of the tree?

Its been very windy the past 2 months so the tree has been blasted with high winds might explain why the leaves are going?

Please see images.

  • I'm frankly not convinced that this a tree that can grow happily in a pot. Is it not possible to plant it in the ground? Also not sure if you have enough space as it can reach a circumference of 8 metres when fully grown in 15 or so years. Was it suggested to you as a tree for a pot?

The whitebeams really aren't suitable for pots.
They get quite large as @amancalledgeorge says.

The younger the tree the earlier the leaf drop. As others have commented on, long-term, your tree must be planted into the ground. They need attention with watering even in the ground. Bucketfuls even in the cooler temperature until late autumn time. Other than that, I think there is nothing wrong with your tree. It's most likely getting ready to shut down.

Thanks for the comments, we are planning on planting the tree in the ground but probably be between another 1-2 years as we haven't decided what to do with our front area.

I'm glad you think there is nothing wrong with the tree, can stop worrying about the leaves going strange! ha

It will struggle in that wee pot though, over the next couple of years, especially in dry, hot weather. You may need to find a shadier spot for it to prevent excessive water loss.
