Transplant cabbages?

I experimented with growing vegetables in the north facing front garden and it has not been very successful. I have several cabbage plants that have been exactly the same size for months. I am wondering if I could dig them up and put them in a warmer place in the back garden to encourage them to grow (maybe in individual pots?). Or another method to try and get something edible from them?

@Mander Just bumping up your thread for you to help get an answer to your query. If in future your thread slips through the net feel free to bring it to the fore yourself as often there is no member around at the time to answer your question.  :)
  • It's a bit of a awkward time of year and problem! What kind of cabbages are they, and Do you have any heads formed at all? If not, assuming they're not massive I'd suggest you take them out, pot them up and over winter in a greenhouse or even outside if you're in a mild area. You'll get an early crop next year.

If you have heads I think you'll be forced to harvest whatever you have - the heads will be tough if you try and over winter that, and moving them will probably check their growth further this time of year....

Maybe someone else will have a better idea!

Generic red cabbage I bought as seedlings from Aldi. They only have the barest hint of forming a head.
  • I'd pot them up, get them in the last of the sun, and try to overwinter them. If you keep them protected you should get earlier cabbages next year. I did it with late sown and forgotten cauliflower and cabbages last/this year. It worked well, so I'm doing it again deliberately this winter!
