  Thanks guys, more food for thought. I have to say the manhole hasn't really annoyed me but now you've pointed it out!

  Thanks for the suggestions guys. In the end we've gone for a Camillia, small Rhododendrons, Hydrangea (1 climbing and 1 not), Hostas and two climbing roses. I'll leave some of the existing plants in but move some of the others into the back garden.
  
  Out of interest can anyone identify these plants?

  I may be completely wrong but I think 1 is a laurel, 2 & 3 are both different varieties of viburnum.
