Care of my Poinsettia

Hi, about two years ago, I bought a Poinsettia for the Christmas period, fully expecting it to die off after the holiday season.

No idea how it's happened, but through neglect and generally doing nothing with it, aside from watering it every couple of weeks, its turned into quite a triffid!

Can anyone suggest what the best course of action is to gain some order over the plant again, I know they are quite picky things and I don't want to stress it too much by messing with it too much / at the wrong time.

Pics attached.

I think it's normally recommended that you cut them down after Christmas to about 6". I think they're pretty tough and grow huge naturally in the (tropical) wild.
East Dorset, new (to me) rather neglected garden.
