Soupy potatoes

I started harvesting my "Cara" potatoes two weeks ago.  A plentiful crop of unblemished, near-spherical, smooth-skinned tubers with a good flavour.   All very good, until they reach the kitchen.  We have taken to steaming them, because when we boiled them they all but dissolved.

Is this normal for Cara, or have I done something wrong in the growing of them?  I thought I'd grown Cara before, but I don't remember this happening.  I kept them watered when it didn't rain, and gave them an occasional dose of nettle brew.

It is a problem caused by growing in a dry summer. The spuds tend to have a lower moisture content and therefore absorb more moisture when cooking causing them to fall apart. It happens to many varieties. Steaming helps and is a good way to cook them even in normal seasons. Next time try much more and more regular water on your crop.

    Thanks, I will.
  • My King Edward potatoes have done this too. My 80 year old Grandad said it was the dry weather but I didn't know if to believe him or if he was just having me on! Turns out he was right.
