wisteria

We have grown a wisteria from seeds 4 years ago and we think it's growing too well. It has flowered very well this year for its age. It has even produced some seeds this summer.
The stems are as big as the wisteria we planted 10 years ago. We are worried in case it takes over the whole garden!
Is there anything we can do to slow it down?
I will be interested to your comments

It's a wisteria.  They like to get very big.  The only way to control it is with regular pruning and training to keep it to size.

From July onwards I cut back every long whippy stem I see forming so that the general shape is maintained and I don't get ambushed when walking past.   I also cut one of our pair back every time we have to start ducking to get in the door.

In February, when it's bare and we can see what's what, we get out the ladders and cut back any stems heading over the roof, under the roof, behind the gutters, further than we want.  We also keep the main stems bare, rubbing or cutting off any shoots that form below the main framework.
