Picking pumpkins before frost?

Blue OnionBlue Onion Posts: 2,995
I know most UK growers don't have pumpkins growing outside, but I thought it would be worth asking..

Today it's 36C and Tuesday night it’s supposed to drop to -3C.  My pumpkins are growing great.. most are orange with a few still green.  I'm worried if I pull them off the vine it's too long until Halloween to store them.  I have my garage I usually keep them in until the big week.. but I've never picked them this early before.  It's up to 30C in the following days, so it won't be that cool in the garage for long storage.

What should I do?  Just cover the pumpkins at night to protect them from frost and let the foliage die out?  I've got my tomatoes and everything else to cover with the spare blankets, so can not devote much protection to the plants.  Or should I pick them and try storing them?

I hope it's not too late @Blue Onion. Normally l would go with the fleece option, but that is one heck of a drop in temperature in a very short time.
Bumping this up in hope.... :)

Thanks!  I picked the orange ones and have covered two large green ones with cardboard boxes upside down over the top of them.  It's very windy, so I couldn’t cover the plant itself.  I spent a busy evening in the snow(!) cutting off brackets of cherry tomatoes, and bring in as much as I could harvest from the cucumbers, etc.  We'll see what tomorrow brings.
