Pear Tree Mystery

Any ideas what has happened to my pear tree?  It is in a large pot but I keep it well watered.  A few days ago I noticed the leaves looked a bit limp so gave it another drink, but literally a couple of days later the majority of leaves have suddenly turned this chocolate brown colour!  Is it just that it briefly dried out, or is it a disease - and if it is a disease, will the 4 pears I have be safe to eat?  Thanks in advance!

  • Yes it looks like those leaves have dried out, although that generally takes a little time to happen and progresses in stages. Keep it well watered. Do you know what root stock it's on? Generally pears will do a lot better in the ground. If you have pears they'll be fine to eat, wait until they've swollen then pick them and ripen in fruit bowl.

Also I can see what looks like some rust on a leaf in the middle of the photo. If it is rust (if it's orange, or turn the leaf over and see if there's a bumpy fungus looking thing underneath), take the leaf off and throw it away into waste bin.

I don't know now what root stock it is on - it was one of these "free, just pay postage" offers from a magazine a few years ago.  Maybe it has got to the point where it will be happier in the ground!  Thank you for your reply!
