Butternut squash

I planted some butter nut squash in August ( they were well established plants not seeds) they have grown well and have lots of leaves and flower buds , but they haven’t actually flowered or set any fruit
am I being too impatient or did I plant them too late in the season

  • Depends where you are and when is your predicted first frost. For most of the UK it's too late to set fruit as the temperatures have taken a dive. I plant out mine in May the latest (some from direct seeding and a couple started in the greenhouse)... they need a fair amount of time to establish themselves and then to grow the fruit.

I live in the South of France and mine are planted out in April if the weather permits, latest May otherwise it's too late in the season for the fruit to set.  I rarely sow seeds as they pop up in the garden around March.

Sorry to tell you but planting summer fruiting plants in August is too late.  August is the time to prepare your garden for winter vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli etc and green leafy veggies such as chard and spinach.  You can also sow root veggies such as carrots and parsnips etc.

So:  March/April/May for summer vegetables   July/August/September for winter vegetables.

I wish you well in your gardening quest!!

  • Thanks so much I will do that 😀
  • I tried growing some spagetti squash this year from seed. They were planted out early summer and eventually began producing flowers, however, it was much later before they began producing female flowers and they began setting and holding. I have ended up with 3 good sized squash, more than enough for just me. Just letting them ripen on the vines. Have put ceramic tiles under each one to keep them off the ground. I tried butternut squash last year but total failure. I was given the plants by a friend and like you, it was too late to plant them out so nothing.

A thought :  In general, count 5 to 6 months for a plant from whoa to go.  Cheers.
