planting now with/without bonemeal...?

Hello everyone,
I have just planted shop-bought hydrangea and hebe in potting compost in the front garden. Should I have used feed and bonemeal too? Should I dig them up again to put that right???
Thank you for your thoughts.

Not if you have foxes. They'll dig it up!

    I wouldn't worry too much.  :)
Bonemeal on it's own [as opposed to Blood, Fish and Bone] helps root formation, but if the ground you've planted them in is decent, it won't matter. A good mulch around the plants with compost will help though, especially for preserving moisture for the hydrangea if you're in a drier area.
I wouldn't feed at this time of year anyway, although the aforementioned B,F&B is slow release and would have been fine.
    Apart from the foxes  :D

Neither down the hole, if it had been earlier you could put the plants in then fork it in around the edge,  but I would wait till spring now, you don’t want to encourage new growth now as it will be weak through the winter.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Thank you Fairygirl and Lyn, yes I have put some mulch around it, hope they make it through the winter. And yes B3 we do have foxes....

Is there a reason you think they won't make it through winter?
Both are very hardy, although Hebes like a drier, sunnier site, while Hydrangeas are the opposite.
They would only struggle if they're tiny, or not in suitable ground.
The variegated Hebes can succumb if you're in a colder, wetter area. They don't tend to do very well here for example.
