Grass very black

in Problem solving


Hi, can someone help with telling me what is happening to my grass there are some isolated areas like in the photo that are almost black. I don't think it's honey aphid. If someone knows what is wrong with the grass perhaps theycthey let me know how to cure it.

    It doesn't look like there's much turf left there...probably better to dig it up, amend and reseed?

    Has it been treated with a feed and weed product? Uneven distribution can make the grass turn black in the overdosed areas.

    Looks like the weeds are taking over, I’d follow George’s instructions.

    Wouldn’t  the weeds have died if it had been treated with weed killer?

    Just weeds encroaching by the look of it. Possibly some Prunella.
    An autumn weed and feed would take care of it, or just wait until spring if the grass isn't growing much just now, and soil isn't damp. It will depend whereabouts you are, as to what condition the ground/soil is in.

    You can reseed after about 6 weeks. That's best done in spring, as it would be too late if you use a weed and feed product now.
    Or - dig out and seed now as per @amancalledgeorge's instructions.  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    Some of my 'lawn' looks a bit like that. It's where some of the weeds were killed by the hot dry weather. Am I bothered? No. Something green will grow there. 
    But if you want actual grass, the experts will advise. 
    In London. Keen but lazy.

    I think the grass can blacken before the weeds die. But I could be mis-remembering because I haven't used the stuff for many years. I could never get the application quite right and it was more trouble than it was worth. Easier to feed separately and weed with a knife.

    We use the 4 in 1 every April,  kills the moss and weeds, back again by next year though😀😖

    The little bit of grass showing in the pic looks very parched, which means it's not healthy and weeds get the upper hand. It really depends on how green people want their lawn too, and what the general conditions are. Difficult in areas where there's long dry spells, to keep grass looking green and healthy.
    I use it each spring too @Lyn, or every second year, and yes, the weeds come back, but on balance, I now have more grass than weeds so it's fine. At least we don't have to worry about lack of rain for the grass though   ;)
