Dicksonia Antarctica - new fronds turning brown

edited September 2020 in Problem solving
Hi all, we planted a Dicksonia Antartica at the end of June and its been doing really well - its sent out about 6 new fronds since we planted so have been really pleased with it.

However  the leafs on the most recent fronds have been turning brown and crispy despite my obsessive watering! There's one very new frond that has come through and even before its unfurled I can see an entire leaf has turned brown.

Should I be worried about it and can I do anything to fix it?

    Welcome to the Forum.
It could be a bit of wind damage. It seems the first front to go higher than the fence?

  • Thanks @Hostafan1. That did cross my mind but most of the damage is below fence level, including to one of the brand new fronds which are right at the crown. I'm thinking about extending the fence upwards anyway to help protect against wind so will give it a go!

Silly question perhaps, but are you giving it plenty of water into the crown and down the trunk?

Make sure you're not spraying it with water during/just before strong sunshine. That means watering in the evening or on dull days, trying not to get the fronds wet.

Mine is suffering too this year. It's sun and wind damage I'm afraid. It's often one frond being battered against another that does most damage to young tender fronds and is very annoying. Any damage will become less obvious when new fronds appear.
