overgrown persicaria

I have some Persicaria firetail that is crowding our other adjacent plants.  Would like to lift and split but am concerned that any left behind roots may shoot and make the problem worse???? Any advice welcome

They tend to spread outwards so to keep them in check, dig down around the sides or edges of the clump and rip out. That way, you don't need to get the whole plant out and not disturbing part of the plant. Provided you back-fill the soil well, mulch around the base if you have space with no other plants around it. That should keep it in check.

The plant will eventually grow outwards again, so it's something you will need to do yearly or every other year if you have plants very close to it.
