  It looks like an unripe walnut.

  Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

  Thanks it’s a very hard fruit, smells awful inside- fake plastic wax smell...

  Another vote here for walnut. The outside green layer is very astringent ... it’ll certainly make a baby pucker his mouth up. Yuk!
  
  if she tries to cut into it she should find a walnut shell
  with the nut inside. 

  
  

  If that’s not what she finds it’s not a walnut.
