Plant identification and how to remove

Hello,

We have a plant growing along the length of our boundary that is appearing out of the ground at various points and grows straight upwards with fairly thin stems. The newer growth has red stems, the older parts of the stems are woody. It seems to have an extensive root system which has allowed it to start popping up through the lawn. The leaves are small - perhaps 1 or 2 centimetres long

Could anyone help us identify it and advise us of any tips on how to get rid of it please?

Thanks!
