Bug on runner beans

  • I’ve physically been picking the young ones off my runner beans as the bask in the morning sun. But I didn’t watch my climbing French beans and they are very poorly.

    The trouble with shield bugs is if pick them off they leave a terrible stench on your hands I know it's their defense against predators, I think they are the hawthorn shield bug.

    I can’t see any bugs in the photos.

  • I identified them as southern green shield bugs. I pick them off and squash them as soon as I see them. Hopefully there’s none left to photograph but the damage is already done.

    What a PITA.  I wonder whether the high temperatures we've had this year have meant that the numbers have built up earlier than previously in the UK ?
