What's happening with this apple tree?

Hello everyone! 

I would be extremely grateful if someone could tell me what's happening with this apple tree. 

Is there any help for it or is it lost case? 
Any input will be greatly appreciated!

    Hi @sophiewest and welcome 😊 

    I suspect you have woodpeckers in the area that have been ripping the bark off and probing into the wood to feast on beetle grubs in your tree. 

    If the tree is full of beetle grubs it’s probably not got a long life ahead of it ... but I’d hang peanut feeders nearby and enjoy watching your woodpecker family. 😍
