Hibiscus falling over

I've just moved into a new home and there's a well established pink hibiscus near the back of the garden with a trunk as think as your wrist.  Problem is, it's falling over!  I can prop it up with some 4x4 posts, but can I prune it?  Do I need to wait until the spring? Any advice welcome.
