Succulent propagation

Hello, I have been given cuttings from an unknown succulent plant - pic of adult plant below:

I have put the end of the cuttings in soil, as per the below pics. They seem to be putting out feeler roots, and I’m wondering if I need to lay the cuttings flat on soil rather than just the ends, so they can root better? Any advice on how to get the best from my currents is much appreciated. Thanks

It's a petrosedum of some kind. They root like weeds so you can't really go wrong with them. I take bits that break off other plants and just throw them into pots with other plants and they root in no time. Or do as you've done and that also works. Air roots might mean it wants more water though. They're a 100% hardy outdoor plant in the UK and as long as they get a good few hours of sun and don't sit in water for too long they'll survive anything.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Ah thanks @wildedges that’s good to know!

I don’t suppose you’ve any idea roughly how long it will take to grow to adult size (like in my first pic)?
  • I think it's a string-of-bananas. I had one years ago, found a piece of it in a gravel bag and grew it on. It died on me after a while though, but seem to recall it looked and behaved exactly like yours.

I'd think it would a good 5+ years to grow to the other photo size. You'll need to take cuttings and root them to get the appearance of your first photo, or it'll just grow longer and throw out side growth off the single stem.

This is a pot I've grown this year from similar cuttings. This was grown in the greenhouse with plenty of light but with taller plants filtering the sun. To get a nice full plant like your first photo you'll need a few more cuttings but they make side shoots rapidly as you can see. Remove some of the side shoots as they grow and plant them into the soil and you'll get denser growth more quickly in the long run. I'll chop all the trailing growth off mine in the spring so it's just the upright growth at the top and then replant the rest as cuttings.

Hello both and thank you for your very helpful replies! I think it is definitely the same type as yours, wildedges. I love how the leaves make little chains... fascinating. I’ve been given five cuttings, I’ll see how they go and will take regular new cuttings from it.
