Hawthorn tree

Hi, I planted a 5ft hawthorn tree around 2/3 months ago. I planted it to the top of the root ball as I was told to do. Last week, I noticed that what looks to be a root is arching up out of the soil and going back down into the soil. Is this normal? I've never had a tree before. Thanks.

Some soil may have eroded from the root all when you water the tree.. exposing the roots.  I suggest you mulch around the tree with some bark mulch, you can get a bag from the garden center.  Just keep it a few inches away from the trunk, to avoid issues from damp or damage around the trunk. Make sure you give it a deep water at least once a week from the hose.  I typically let it run for about 10 minutes or so on newly planted trees.  Next year give it about the same once a week during the dry parts of summer.
