Seeds kept in a very hot shed. Still good?

Hi everyone,

I recently discovered several packets of seeds that I had forgotten about in my shed.

The only thing is that with the way the shed is positioned in the garden (inherited from previous owners) it gets extremely hot in the summer.

Do you think these seeds will still be OK having spent 6 months exposed to high temperatures? Or are they ruined? (I hope not).

Grateful for you views!

There's only one way to truly find out @hatty_ ;)

I found some seeds that were way out of date earlier this year (use by 2010/2011) but planted a few out of curiosity. 80%+ germination success with the rocket, about 20-25% for the parsley but absolutely no joy with the basil.

Have they changed in any way - gone mouldy, sprouted, etc.? Give 'em a go, as per instructions on the packet, and keep your fingers crossed.

  • Make a kitchen roll sandwich and test a few! Wet through a piece of kitchen roll, lay a few seeds in the middle. Fold it over in half so seeds are fully in contact with the wet towel. Wrap the wet towel in some aluminum foil, then put it in your airing cupboard or somewhere warm for a week.

If the seeds are good, they'll sprout.

Excellent advice, thank you @Biglad and @strelitzia32. I’m off to make a kitchen roll sandwich!
