Clear jelly on rhubarb plants

Does anyone know what a clear jelly like pool at the base of rhubarb stalks might be? Dots up the stalk too.

Water-retaining gel from the potting compost? It looks like a young plant that's only recently been put in the ground. The crystals are very tiny white specks when dry so there could easily have been some stuck on the stems, and now that it's rained they've absorbed loads of water.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

Sometimes it's the sap leaking when something's had a nibble. Usually there are bruised looking spots too.
  • I often see this and there has been no potting compost anywhere near it. I have always assumed it is slug related.
  • Thank you... The plant was split this year and fertilised with manure.
I think it could be slugs.
