Disfigured sweet corn

I have grown sweet corn successfully for the past 4 years, but this year I have had the weird experience of male flowers trying to grow cobs at the top of the plant, and regular cobs splitting/forking into 2 or 3 small cobs. There are a few good regular cobs, but pretty rubbish compared with earlier years. Plants were bought from the same supplier each time. I have watered every day, so they have never dried out. Any ideas please, thank you!

I’ve done a bit of googling and found this ... https://permies.com/t/56390/Mutant-corn

if you scroll down to the post by John Weilland dated May 20, 2016 you’ll see his explanation of what he thinks causes this.

  • Wow, thank you so much for this! I thought I’d checked through most of the posts, but obviously missed this. Very interesting, and I think I will send photographs to the suppliers, who are a reputable company. Many thanks again!
