Hebe (I think) ID?

TheGreenManTheGreenMan Posts: 1,957
Hi,

I bought this back in 2017 when I started to fill my yard up with pots.

At the time I never thought I'd need to know the name of anything I bought (you just put it in a pot and you're done!); I now know better.

Trying to find the name of a Hebe is very tricky.

Does anyone know which one this is?

It's grown so much this year.  All I did was replace the top and bottom few inches of John Innes 3.

I just want to know what it is as it's the only nameless plant I have now.

    It's not a Hebe, it's a Pieris  :)
There's quite a few variegated ones.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • It's a variegated pieris, possibly Pieris japonica 'Little Heath'.
  • Yes, agree with @Fairygirl, looks just like my Pieris Little Heath. Needs things on the acid side.

No - fine in neutral soil. They just don't care for alkaline soil  :)

Well there you go.  I will stop listening to the Mother-in-law!

    @Fairygirl @rachelQrtJHBjb @Pianoplayer Thank you!

No wonder I couldn't find it!

I have done almost nothing to it and it just sits there growing and growing and the little bells appear in spring.

Shady spot and enough moisture - that's about all they need  :)

Fine with some sun too, but more difficult in a pot where they can get dry more easily. The variegated ones suffer a bit more than the plain ones too.
Grand for your climate there I would think - they love it in ours too  ;)

  • I love them - one of my favourite shrubs.

I also love Hebes - the Hebe Society web site is fantastic for identification, should you have further discussions with your mother in law!

    Thanks @Fairygirl @Pianoplayer

It sits in a spot that gets sun (from 09:30-15:00) in summer but I keep it well watered.  This is Gateshead sun we're talking about so I will probably leave it where it is.  It seems happy.
