  My favourite caterpillar, have a lot here.
  Hawk moth.  Take care of him.

  As @lyn says, it’s the magnificent Elephant Hawkmoth caterpillar ... he’s on the ground looking for a dry area where he can pupate over winter and appear in its adult glory in early summer

  Thank you both very much. He really was a beautiful creature. I actually picked him up and put him out of the way under a bush as I thought a bird would likely get in in the middle of quite a large lawn.
