Cherry tree is bleeding - what on Earth is this

Hi folks, we purchased and planted this tree in June. I removed the supporting cane yesterday and found 2 of these. What is it and what should I do about it?

It is resin exuded by the tree where it has been damaged, probably by the ties to the cane.  The resin is the cherry tree equivalent of a scab on our skin, following a cut or graze.  However, it is possible that canker has entered the wound.  If so, the bark around the area will be slightly sunken and it does look like that in the photo.  Unfortunately, the only known cure is to cut out the affected wood, which doesn't seem possible in this case without causing even more damage.
A couple of things to try:
    • Send that photo to the suppliers telling them you suspect it has canker and see if they'll replace it for you.
    • Wait a year and see if it seems to be getting better or worse.  If the latter, replace.
    More info here:

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Contacted them and they’ve asked for photo’s which I’ve sent off this morning.
  • This is the reply I received back after sending them a selection of photo’s.

    ” Good morning.

Thank you for sending the pictures, I do believe this is overactive healing of the tree from the damage caused in the wind. There are no brown or black spots on the trees leaves that i can see. The foliage looks good and when canker sets into the tree this is the first thing to deteriorate.

The damaged area i suggest to do a winter wash to clean the wound and then apply Arbrex to seal it.

    I hope this helps.”

    What is a winter wash?.

  • I got the wash this morning from Mole Valley Farmers in Frome. It says on the packaging to apply it from Nov onwards. Should I just disregard and do it now?.
