    Making me hungry, @Pete.8
How can you lie there and think of England
When you don't even know who's in the team

  • i wouldn't be able to be a winter without basil, without basil the food wont taste as good as it would be together with basil. i know its a bit late for outside growing which is why im doing inside.

Ive just installed a mini fan for the basil which is giving it wind hopefully it will help with the leafs, i picked some of the basil outoff the pot and ate the leafs the smell is wonderfull.

i was thinking to pick out some more and plant them into a smaller pot but i will still continue to use my auto watering system just incase it is fungus and they die.

The 3 types im growing in that flowerpot is 3 different basil that is the main basil im using in my thai/asian food. mostly sweet basil and thai basil. The lemon basil is nice aswell but its not needed for the food i make its just to replace it with lemon juice to give it a better flavour.

i managed to catch a week of the sun before our weather changed a month ago and now its to cold. it went from 25-30C to 10C within 2 weeks. so outside growing is to late for my part now.

Gotta grab the tastes and smells of summer while it lasts :)

The toms and mozzarella is one of 2 very special summer dinners for me.
The other is Elizabeth David's Piedmont roasted peppers  - the taste with shop bought ingredients is so bland compared with properly ripe, tasty home grown peppers, toms and basil.

It'll all be over in a few weeks, then I have 8-9 months to wait until next season's are ready - but it's worth the wait :)

You can’t beat a grilled tomato and basil on toast.

@Pete8 Now that's a repast!  We have tomato salad: olive oil, basil and black cracked pepper for lunch and dinner - I'd even have it on toast for breakfast!!  The basil should hold until December, I hope.  They have strange curly leaves.  Up to 4-leaf stage at the moment - still 38° (I am shading my planter from the sun having placed it in a sunny position for winter, while Mr. Sinder has to shine heat lamps on his).  Anyway, we are expected rain for Saturday and a drop in temperature. One hopes!

@Pete.8   I am an Elizabeth David fan too - my books are in tatters, but I love her concoctions!

Thanks @tuikowhai34 it was lovely and my basil is continuing to grow really well, but it won't be long until we get a few chills then it'll all grind to a halt.
I've got 2 plants in 2L pots that are doing really well in the g/house. I'll try and keep them indoors somewhere sunny, but my record with house plants is not great.

I think if you use quality ingredients in Elizabeth David's recipes they're often so simple and delicious, and nothing beats home grown.

Much as I look forward to the tomato, basil, cucumber etc season, by the time we get to late Sept I'm often relieved that the last of the tomatoes have rotted on the staging :)

2 weeks later I'm yearning for them again, but that's what growing is all about.
At least where you are you have the weather on your side as we get chillier and I hope your plants continue to to produce well for you - some festive basil :)

Bought a nice lump of brisket this morning that I'll turn into 8 portions of warming winter casserole tomorrow. The weather is miserable all of sudden and I fancy something autumnal. Bramley and blackberry pie for afters :)
