Cypripedium Tibeticum Orchid

I was given a Cypripedium Tibeticum Orchid as a present because I wanted an unusual plant to grow in a shaded spot in the garden. A small plant arrived in a 9cm pot and in my opinion there wasn't a big root system but I planted it out and made sure it had good drainage and included some orchid compost. It survived a couple of months. My question is do these orchid die-back and return next year or has it gone forever?
