This is taking over my meadow grass

Hi - please help me!
Early in May we had a meadow turf laid called 'birds and bees'.  It has been rather disappointing, only a few cornflowers, loads of Ammi, no poppies and has been completely taken over by, what looks like, a parsnip. The root is in my hand and the background is the leaf in the picture. Does anyone have any idea what this is and if I need to remove it before I cut it back and reseed it in Autumn?  These plants are taking all the moisture out the soil and I am so disappointed.  We have gone back to the people that laid it, who haven't a clue what it is and in turn are waiting to hear back from the producer, but that will take weeks.
Thanks so much in advance for any help!

  • Could it possibly be a type of evening primrose? Has it flowered at all?

Looks a bit like horseradish. Does it smell of horseradish? Cut it open, you'll soon know if you touch your tongue on the cut root.

Its def not horseradish, but I can see your thinking.  I think an evening primrose might be on the money.  It hasn't flowered at all, but I read up and it seems they flower in the second year.  I'm going to dig some up and leave some and see what happens!
Thanks again for replying - I really appreciate it
