I have a rule with spiders, anything that isn't huge and hairy can stay in the house all spring summer and autumn, where it is expected to catch and eat as many flies and mosquitos as it can. then come the autumn clean I catch all of them I can find with the vacuum cleaner, that can get to 20-30 EACH room we only really get cellar spiders, I believe they eat all the other ones. By the time spring rolls round again they have bred and are back to 2-3 each room and so they are ready to keep the flies down until the next autumn when I cull them again. outside everything gets to live (spider wise).

I keep reading the title as "false windows on the house" . Clearly those are totally unacceptable .

My OH was bitten by one last year when he rolled over onto it in bed. There was another recent post from someone whose wife had been bitten by one. I don't think they bother you unless you bother them though.
Hi Singing Gardener. Was your OH ok? How bad was it compared to a wasp sting?
He had quite a bad reaction in terms of swelling but not too painful. Mind you, he's tough. He got bitten by an adder when we visited a maize maze and didn't even notice until the next day!

I’m glad he was ok. What I’m reading from this is that this spider has a bite worse than an adder bite. Eek!

    Snap @Hostafan1

I also have a rule with spiders, inside they get squashed, outside I dont unless they look like the sort you get inside!
Can't put them outside alive which I  put down to my brother telling me that they will come back in and get me, you would think that after 60 years it wouldn't  still affect me.
Maybe those who say we shouldn't kill any insect wouldnt be quite so keen about malaria carrying mosquitoes or the Tetse fly, Lyme disease from ticks, fleas..............

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was expecting lots of opinions on the toleration of false windows.

Ugg.. we have the real things here in Utah.. Black Widows are in the nooks around my raised beds, in the children’s sandbox, piles of leaves in corners, etc.  I leave them alone unless I see them on the kids outdoor toys or in the garage.  Oddly enough I've only ever found one in the house (in my son's snow boot(!) sitting unused for three seasons in the closet).  Luckily I shook the dust bunnies out before putting it on my three year old, and squashed that MF before I even thought twice.
In the house we mainly get 'Lucas' spiders.. which we usually leave alone unless they are large, which get escorted outside.

The spiders that live indoors are exactly that though - house spiders. It's basically cruel to put them outside as there's no suitable habitat for them.
I always have some indoors. They often run along with their clickety feet on the wooden floors at night, going from cupboard to cupboard. Youngest gets the heebie jeebies, and oldest just laughs.
    So do I  :D
Nothing worse than a false window - too easy to fall out.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Since having my allotment/garden I have grown accustomed to all the "creepy crawlies" including the spider. Never thought I would. The shed which is old and inherited is full of spiders and they are fascinating to watch. A housefly on the window was grabbed by a spider never to be seen again. If they are in the house so what. The only thing I abhor is the slug. Having collected 101 in four days!
Glad I wasn't the only one intrigued to read about "false windows".  :D
