They really are snakes, grass snakes in fact. They've laid their eggs in there for the last two years. We have quite a large natural pond that fills in late Autumn and empties over summer, the snakes love it because its full of frogs, newts etc. I've gotten used to them now but rather not disturb them. At the other end of the garden we sometimes see Adders, they hunt the field mice and rats. UK's answer to the Everglades down here! Even seen a twister go across the field in 2016......! With 4 young boys under 10 every day is an adventure.
Brilliant @wonkeyyoks! Are you sure you're in the UK? Great upbringing/environment for your boys - I hope they love it. We get adders in parts of Scotland, but because of the climate, they give birth to live young rather than eggs. That's your useless piece of information for today There's a few hills which notoriously have them tootling around. You see them out in the open if it's sunny - Mount Keen [Angus] is the most common one.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
How lovely .... we sometimes get grass snakes here as we're not far from the marshes ... one year I was able to get a photo of one in our pond, eating a frog.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
