Crop rotation

In preparation for when my potatoes are all dug up, I’m wondering what I do with the bed then? I know next spring should be onions and roots following a four year crop rotation cycle but do I just leave the bed over winter? Keen to maximise production so wondered is there anything I can grow in the bed (and other beds once current crops harvested) in the months between? Or is it a case of improving the soil over winter? Green manure?? Help for a semi novice much appreciated!

You might find the odd small crop like a few late lettuce etc. but I think it's wise to remember that, if you keep taking nutrition OUT of your soil, you're going to have to keep putting more back IN.  For me, autumn is when nature produces its own answers like fallen leaves that can be dug in and left to the worms to convert into spring food, ready for the next season?
  • Ah that makes perfect sense, thanks so much, I’ll leave it be!

I think I share your enthusiasm @terri_stella! At times, I find the patience required to be hard work but I must be getting to grips with it because I'm planning for next year and preparing soil that won't have anything planted in it for months  :open_mouth:

Lack of acreage is my main frustration. Hence, feeling the need to fill every space. I'd love an allotment but I fear that will never happen  :(

  • Same, need a bigger plot next year!
They say the best gardeners plan ahead so we must be doing something right!
