If they’re crocus they’re corms and will have the basal plate formed by the previous year’s corm at the base. It will also be solid.

A bluebell grows from bulbs made up from layers that you can peel off like an onion.

Cutting one of them in half so we can determine the structure will reveal whether it’s a corm or a bulb so we’ll at least know what plants it isnt.

    Could they be allium bulbs?

Hasn't your friend seen these growing or has he just moved in?

They look very similar to my snakes head fritillary bulbs.

Could even be Arum maculatum bulbs.
As said cut one in half and post a picture of the inside.

When cut in half it is just like an onion - layers, juicy, no scent.

It's tricky. He is in and out of hospital - it's not really a priority with all that's going on. I will ask him when I next see him.

Didn't @Dovefromabove say bluebells are like onions?

There were so many we dug up, that I would say there is a good chance of them being Spanish bluebells, which are everywhere around here. If they are, I would leave them in the ground and cover with weed membrane.
  • I had some bulbs  (if I remember rightly) like those that were a specie tulips. Quite small about 3/4 inch across. Hope they are. Let us know next April please. Valerie
