  I wouldn't overthink it. Dig a hole big enough to fit the root ball and plant it level with the soil.

  I just dig a hole and bung 'em in. As @Dirty Harry  describes
  
  I usually mix a bit of compost with the soil I take out, and a sprinkle of B,F&B, and that's it. Water and let them get on with it.
  You might need to water a fair bit depending on time of planting and your climate. I don't have to worry much here.

  It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
