Butterfly Bush Problem

Hi
I am new to the site and would be very grateful if someone could please look at the image of my buddleia and tell me if it is alright? The leaves at the top appear to be funnelled,  is that normal? Also, it appears to have some yellowish leaves in the middle. Any help would be much appreciated!!

Hello and welcome to the forum  :)
It looks to me to be stressed due to dry conditions. Give it at least two buckets of water and make sure you pour it slowly so it absorbs it all instead of running of the surface.  Often happens when the ground is really dry. Good luck   :)

It is probably not helped by being surrounded by all that grass, a bit of clear space around it would help.

Agree with the above, all that grass around it is competing for nutrients.

    Is the soil well drained?

If it's any consolation, they are tough. You only have to look at derelict buildings with buddleia growing out of the roof. Keep it watered and it should survive.

Yes - the common one does, that one looks like globosa.
If so, they're not quite as robust as the davidiis either, so the exposed looking spot won't help.
I'd agree  with the others - all that competition for water. Even a buddleia will struggle with that, unless it's raining regularly.

  • Thank you all so much for your help. Will get the grass cleared as soon as possible. Just one thing, I live in the Lake District and we have had a HUGE amount of rain over the past couple of days but the leaves are still funnelled? Would the grass be taking all of it away? Will Deffo clear out and see what happens.
    Thank you all again.

The foliage can act like an umbrella ... it can be surprisingly dry under shrubs.

Dig all the grass away from around it, cut all the branches back to 2” as soon as the flowers start to die off, I can’t see from the picture if it’s finished flowering or not, if you leave it much later you won’t get flowers next year as these bloom on this year’s growth.
