Two mystery plants

Hi Folks
I asked about these (Pics 3&4) a while ago. They are all growing well but still no flowers!

The first pics are of a shrub outside a cafe on the island. It’s very fragrant - I noticed it last year too.

  • The second one could be a dwarf aster

First one is Mirabilis jalapa or 4 o clock flower or at least that's what  a Google  image search comes up with.

Yes, first is Mirabilis Jalapa , here in France they call it Belle de Nuit (Beauty of the night).
I think the second could be Sweet Williams. They are biennial so will flower next year.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Thanks guys. That makes sense. I seem to remember collecting SW seeds last year!
The Mirabilis is a striking colour. Can I take cuttings from it? 🤔

They're sold as annual bedding round here and the RHS advises to treat it as an annual as it is not reliably hardy but you can collect seeds to sow next year.

Alternatively, if you can pot up the plant and keep it frost free over winter you can try dividing the tubers next spring -

  • Very useful info - thank you. I will try to collect seeds as I would love one of these plants in my garden. The ‘splashed’ flower colour is so unusual. Most plants overwinter ok here on the IoW.
